NEB Flying Under the Radar

NEB just finished one of the best seasons on record for any North East Baseball team. Twenty three division 1 baseball commitments at top 16 finish at one of the nations top events, three players ranked in the top 100 for the 2018 MLB draft, awesome…unbelievable what these young men have accomplished. There are players committed to Boston College, Wake Forest, Texas, Tulane, Harvard, Stoney Brook, UConn, St. Johns, Northwestern, Richmond, Fairleigh Dickinson, UMass, just to name a few.

With all of these accolades some players are receiving, which are well deserved, there are always a few guys who do not receive the attention they deserve; Peter Burns, Travis Lane, Mike Doherty, Jake Sanderson Geoff Mosseau, Brian Craven, and Matt Killian.

Peter Burns is a 5’10 left handed hitting catcher committed to play college baseball at Boston College. It has been our pleasure to coach Peter for the past two summers. He is without a doubt one of the best defenders behind the plate that we have ever coached. This was not always the case, but he worked his tail off to elevate his game behind the dish. Not only is Peter the top catching prospect in New England I think he is the ultimate “glue guy”. Players gravitate to Burns, he is a natural leader and I don’t even think he knows it. I could not be more proud of Peter and look forward to watching him locally at BC and beyond.

Travis Lane 6’3 RHP committed to pitch at Boston College as well. With the nickname “Big Tasty”, you better be good. Travis is a soft spoken when you don’t know him but has a big personality. Lane recently topped out at 93 at the WWBA in Jupiter and has announced his presence with authority. For us this summer he would sit 89-91 and can really pitch. I think that is what separates Travis and Doherty from a lot of players is they can “pitch” Travis is one of the top 5 pitchers in New England and see him hopefully making an immediate impact at the collegiate level.

Sal Frelick 5’10 left handed hitting SS committed to Boston College. Sal has been known mostly for his football ability but watch out….he is a better baseball player. That could be because I know absolutely nothing about football, but he is going to be fun to watch at the collegiate level. I am not sure where Sal will end up on the field but no matter where he does he will be a plus defender with the chance to be a true lead off guy who can steal bases. Missed a good chunk of the summer but when he returned he was electric. Only downside is he wears really tight clothing.

Mike Doherty 6’3 RHP committed to pitch at Northwestern University. Mike works 86-88 touching 89 with an above average breaking ball, and another one of those guys who can pitch, attends the Middlesex school. Great guy and the best is yet to come for Mike. I would not be surprised if he had a velo spike this high school season.

Jake Sanderson 6’2 RHP committed to pitch at UCONN. When Jake is put in the right role he is lights out and one of the top relievers around. Was 88-90 touched 91 with some funk in his delivery and really good slider. Jake was a go to go for us this summer out of the bullpen and I believe that will be his role at the next level. I can not say enough about Sanderson.

Matt Killian 6’2 CF who is committed to play at Stoney Brook. Killian can really really defend and may be able to stay in CF. Matt has some tools and showed shines of being able to hit with some power. Needs to cut down on his swings and misses but could find him self in a good position if he continues to work on his craft. After a below average sophomore year Matt turned it on and played extremely well his Junior year. Very athletic and can run, big things coming for Matt this year.

Geoff Mosseau 6’5 LHP committed to St. Johns University in NY. Maybe the most underrated player on this list. Big projectable pitched 84-86 topped at 88. Another guy that I would not be surprised to see a velo jump from come spring. Geoff really has had to learn how to pitch because his fastball is not overpowering which I believe will play into his favor when his velo takes a jump this spring.

Brian Craven 5’10 INF committed to the University of Richmond. Brian has a chance to be a legit two way guy at the next level. Throwing from a low slot, where is he has been up to 88. As an infielder he is a switch hitter who is solid defensively.
